VFW Lomita, CA

July 17th, 2010

Well what do I have for ya today? Not too much…but I do have a shoot next MON July 19th @ the VFW in Lomita, CA. Don’t worry, I’ll post some pix. It should prove interesting. Always lots of cool things in VFWs.Old guys; booze; dark dank bars; a hard-talking female bartender with a pack of Pall Malls hidden in her cleavage; medals; flags; more booze; multiple overflowing ash cans in the back; etc.; etc.

All kidding aside, it should be a great shoot.

B-rolling @ Vanguard

July 12th, 2010

shot a few hours of b-roll yesterday. nothing too complicated. nothing too intense. no guns going off. no road rage. no inversion tables or talks of prescription drug abuse.

just a pleasant lil’ shoot @ Vanguard University in Costa Mesa, CA. we spotted a few flat-billers, and even one or two urban cougars — remember, this is the OC, my friends.

nevertheless, we followed Huff — aka Aaron Huffman,  in and around campus. pulled some nice footage of the classroom dynamic. even caught some interesting interactions with the professor .

so all in all, things went great. many many thanks to Vangaurd; the kids; the professor; the crew; and of course — Aaron.

couple pix to wet your whistle…

it was a long day

down in the OC. navigating past tattooed flat-billers and well-preserved cougars, but we found it; finally, the OC Vet Center.

and we met with Aaron Huffman. former Jarhead, Iraq Vet, friend, and participant in the doc.

by the end, we were all tired. noshed genuine Italian pizza — although the cooks looked Mexican — they tried their best. and it was good enough. bid aaron ado, thanked him for his time, patience and all-around good nature.

few pix for the curious…

what’s going on, OITB-style

June 19th, 2010

well, we’ve got a shoot with Aaron Huffman next FRI — JUNE 25th @ the  Orange County Vet Center — and the final     sit-down interview later that day.

so far, things have went pretty well — knock wood — and with the project coming to a close, the technical stuff secured (for the most part), i can start thinking more visually.

the whole director-thing, right? try to choose some unusual angles, dramatic lighting…maybe even some ominous background noise???

in Daniel’s boots – 08 june 10

June 9th, 2010

well it was a long day. sun beating down with a mugginess in the air.

wet.

and i was coming off an all-nighter – trying to write, trying to read. my spine burning – nothing excruciating – nagging @ me like a sylvia plath poem. so i woke up late. ’bout ten. showered; shaved; fed the pooch; and headed up to Torrance, CA to meet Daniel Wong. See, that’s where he lives – about 20 minutes from El Camino Junior College. And today was the day: FINAL EXAMS. Math to be specific.

Daniel graciously allowed us to capture on film, one of his first EVER final exams. .

we got lucky. damn lucky, if you ask me…

the gods of war on our side, we tracked Daniel to school, did some walk/talk interviews, followed him to class – bid him ado, and even managed to gather some interesting interviews with fellow students.

several solid sequences, pre-planning like a champ, and with the help of a very talented crew, we managed to have successful shoot. many thanks to all involved!

here’s a few pix. take a gander.

The Academic Front

June 5th, 2010

so i’ve got a title – thanks to my buddy Meron Langsner via Facebook. put up a little call for nom de plums or whatnot and i gotta buncha responses. The Academic Front just felt right. you know? gave me that warm and fuzzy, right where it counts. no, not that place…the other one. and next TUE, June 8th, we’ve got our shoot with Daniel Wong @ El Camino College. Final Exams.

they can be tough, i know.

remember once, back when i was youngin’, attending Loyola, and i was arrested. wasn’t charged, but i was arrested nevertheless.

and it was the day of my final.

and it’s 2am.

and i’m sitting in a cell with some homeless fella who stinks of fish.

and he’s squating on a communal toilet; smiling, toothless, hard to tell if he wants to befriend me or befriend me.

jailer comes by. says, “mandia – you wanna make bail?”

i take that in. real slow. look around – all these gangbanger-types in adjacent cells. drunks, puking. addicts, withdrawing – crying like children.

and then i’m moved to a solitary cell. the bars are closed. CLANG!

it echoes a little. i remember the echo.

couple hours later I’m writing about the intricicies of emily dickinson’s lesbianism and the Romantics. kids in class kept tweaking their noses…musta been the fish.

but hey, on another note, Daniel was kind enough to share a picture of his unit upon arrival to CONUS…after the protestors.

June’s the month…

May 28th, 2010

…when a ton of footage will be shot. Let’s see – we’ve got an impending shoot on June 8th; involves Daniel Wong. Should prove to be very interesting…we’re going to follow him to his first Final Exam @ El Camino College. Do a little before and after. Next, we’ve got a tentative shoot with Aaron Huffman @ Chapman down in the O.C. And finally, I might just do the “big,” SIT-DOWN interviews with both Veterans towards the end of June. Other than that, I’m quickly realizing how helpful this experience is in terms of developing my storytelling abilities…priceless stuff.

International Documentary Association Article!

May 20th, 2010

Iraq, Care of Daniel Wong

May 20th, 2010

just a little update on “Operation In Their Boots.” Daniel Wong; Army ground pounder/Doc participant, was kind enough to share some photos of himself whilst hunting insurgents in Iraq. amazing stuff when you think about – soldiering in the so-called ‘cradle of civilization.’

take a peek, some are sure to be in the doc:
