Swords to Plowshares was started in 1974 by six veterans volunteering at the Veterans Administration in San Francisco and a few others who were concerned that the needs of returning Vietnam veterans were not being addressed. They formed an organization whose guiding principle was that veterans must never again be treated as second-class citizens, such as they were after the Vietnam War, and that war in general causes wounds that last beyond the battlefield. Swords to Plowshares is a community-based organization whose programs have evolved to meet the changing needs of veterans. With the country now involved in armed conflict, Swords to Plowshares’ programs will remain among the most needed in our society.
The Iraq Veteran Project ensures that recent veterans receive the support, services and protection they need to successfully transition home. Our services are available to all GWOT veterans, former Active Duty, Guard and Reserve, with any type of discharge.

Our mission is to provide life-changing opportunities for men and women of the U.S. Armed Forces who have suffered severe injuries and need the support of grateful communities to realize their dreams. Sentinels of Freedom provide four year “life scholarships” to help vets become self-sufficient. Our vets are finding that once they’re released from the hospital, they face the everyday hardships of finding a home, continuing their education, or going to work to support their families. Every American faces the same difficulties, but in the vet’s case, the situation is made more difficult because of their sacrifice. The four-year program is meant for veterans with severe service-related injuries who have the aptitude, attitude, and drive to become independent and successful members of society.

At the Clinic, all participants are able to develop winter sports skills and take part in a variety of adaptive workshops, which demonstrate that having a physical or visual disability need not be an obstacle to an active, rewarding life.

The Paralyzed Veterans of America, a congressionally chartered veterans service organization founded in 1946, has developed a unique expertise on a wide variety of issues involving the special needs of our members—veterans of the armed forces who have experienced spinal cord injury or dysfunction.
Paralyzed Veterans will use that expertise to be the leading advocate for:
- Quality health care for our members
- Research and education addressing spinal cord injury and dysfunction
- Benefits available as a result of our members' military service
- Civil rights and opportunities which maximize the independence of our members
To enable PVA to continue to honor this commitment, we must recruit and retain members who have the experience, energy, dedication, and passion necessary to manage the organization and ensure adequate resources to sustain the programs essential for PVA to achieve its mission.

Pillar One: To provide the necessary tools and therapies that are otherwise not being provided.
Pillar Two: To fund and promote physical and leisure/athletic activities that enhance the veteran’s physical and emotional well-being.
Pillar Three: Advocacy, Our goal is a nationwide network of volunteers who have “been there done that" who will act as guides for those following behind them. These family advisors help because they want to help and the experience that they bring can, and in many cases will be, more valuable than any
financial assistance that the fund may be in a position to provide.
